ADAT tape 8 track recorder to computer

QUESTION:

I would like to move tracks from an ADAT 8 track tape recorder to computer. My idea is getting the Tascam US-1800 interface which has 8 mic inputs and a USB connection to the computer. The ADAT has RCA output jacks. If I get XLR mic to RCA adapters, will it work and will the quality be acceptable?

ANSWER:
Your plan to transfer tracks from the ADAT 8 track to computer is fine and should work great. One thing to keep in mind is the kind of audio signal that the ADAT supplies. I would guess it is a line level signal, not a mic level. In that case, you might use RCA to 1/4" adapters and go into a line level input.

I'm pretty sure this will give you the result you are looking for.

Another thing I would consider instead of the Tascam is a Presonus FireStudio. It is a FireWire interface, on par with the Tascam. I use a Presonus system (a DigiMax 8 channel preamp), and can say that it works fine. I like having 8 channels of preamp in one unit, and the quality is great.

Hope this helps. Leave your comments below.
